PETRA TOU
ROMIOU THE BIRTH OF
APHRODITE
Alongside the road
between Paphos and Lemesos, 25 km south-east of
Paphos, some rocks can be seen in the sea. This
place is called "Petra Tou Romiou". It was here
that, according to legend, Aphrodite came out
of the sea. The Greek name Petra Tou Romiou (
rock of the Greeks) is related to the story of
Digenis Akritas, the legendary Byzantine keeper
of the frontier. He managed to keep the
plundering Saracens at a distance. With
remarkable force he threw the immense rock on
their ships, thereby destroying
them.
